2026 GOTR Alumni Scholarship Recipients

Girls on the Run Western Massachusetts recently awarded two scholarships to program alumna, each of them receiving $1,000 to support their further education. Scholarship recipients were selected on the criteria of their student leadership, academic success, community involvement and character. Recipients of the 2026 Alumni Scholarships are Layla Simmons and Kathryn Clark.

Layla Simmons participated in Girls on the Run in elementary school in West Springfield. She has volunteered as a tutor, participated in marching band, and enjoys yoga and running.

Layla wrote, “Joining Girls on the Run was one of the best decisions my younger self could have made. The program helped me learn how to believe in myself and my capabilities as a young woman. I met so many strong, inspiring girls who pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow both physically and mentally. I have a genuine gratitude for this program, as it has inspired me to become a leader and has given me so much more confidence in myself.”

Kathryn Clark participated in Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole at Zanetti School in Springfield. In high school, she played field hockey and lacrosse, served as a peer mentor for younger students, and stayed actively involved in Girl Scouts, earning the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, along with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and the Purple Heart for Leadership.

Kathryn shared, “Girls on the Run helped me through some of the most difficult moments in my life. Being part of the program gave me strength, support, and a sense of belonging. It taught me how to keep going, even when things felt overwhelming. Because of my experiences in Girls on the Run, I have become a more empathetic and understanding person.”

Congratulations to Layla and Kathryn! Thank you for being part of our Girls on the Run community and for truly exemplifying our core values. We wish you continued success in college.
